As Freud wrote – “We are so made that we can derive intense enjoyment from a contrast.” On March 15th at 8pm at the innovative Gallery MC, Composers Concordance presents the next installment of its ‘Contrast’ series. The program, entitled ‘Contrast’ – Scratch Vs. Squeeze,’ juxtaposes composer / digital DJ Gene Pritsker, a.k.a. ‘Di.J. Noizepunk’, with acclaimed composer / accordion virtuoso William Schimmel.

Gene Pritsker has been described as “audacious..multi-talented (NYTimes), and as a digital DJ he manipulates, in real time, an eclectic array of contemporary classical music, jazz, hip-hop, and world sounds. He has been featured at various festivals and by many ensembles and performers, including the Adelaide Symphony, MDR Symphony, The Athens Camarata, Brooklyn and Berlin Philharmonic, and has orchestrated major Hollywood movies. Pritsker will perform his ‘Lili Boulanger ReMix’ and ‘Lightnin’ Hopkins ReMix,’ among others.

William Schimmel will perform his works ‘Monty,’ based on Vittorio Monti, and ‘My Diaspora,’ recalling music of Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok, and 70s rock among others. Regarded as the world’s greatest accordionist by National Public Radio, Schimmel has performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in America (and the Kirov), and virtually every chamber music group in New York City. Pop star colleagues range from Sting to Tom Waits, who said “Bill Schimmel doesn’t play the accordion, he is the accordion”.

‘Contrast – Scratch Vs. Squeeze’ will culminate with a suite for accordion and DiJ by notable NYC composers Milica Paranosic, Patrick Grant, Dan Cooper, Jed Distler, and Joseph Pehrson. The program will be followed by after-party in the gallery, including a performance by the group Erbium.

Composers Concordance is a presenting organization for contemporary music with a 28-year-history of producing concerts in New York City. We strive to present music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. In recent years, we have expanded our series to include events at art galleries, clubs, and other alternative venues, in addition to the traditional concert hall. Directors Gene Pritsker, Dan Cooper, and Milica Paranosic, together with Founding Directors Joseph Pehrson and Patrick Hardish, curate the programs, and lead the Composers Concordance Ensemble, which is the ensemble-in-residence at William Paterson University. Composers Concordance has also created a new record label, Composers Concordance Records, with distribution by Naxos. The growing catalog includes an eclectic variety of music, including contemporary chamber, electronic, hip-hop, jazz, opera, and beyond. As Raul d’Gama Rose has written in All About Jazz “(These) composers are breaking barriers between genres and idioms…modern pieces that run the gamut of tonal color and timbral experimentation with definitive skill and absolute mastery.” Our overriding vision is to see contemporary music, composers, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music, performed and recorded well, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition.
